The Kiwanis Club of St. Andrews is pleased to announce that the funding for their annual community grants for the coming year of 2023 is secure.

Uncategorized

Press Release for November 2022: The Kiwanis Club of St. Andrews is pleased to announce that the funding for their annual community grants for the coming year of 2023 is secure.

Since 1935, Kiwanis has supported on average 30 projects and local organizations annually. Diverse projects for youth and seniors alike including health, education, sports, the arts and nature providing enjoyment and caregiving through these undertakings in our community. Funding for these grants is derived from the profitability of operations at the Kiwanis Oceanfront Campground.

This October, there was an unexpected threat to their funding source, with the startling loss of the kitchen/recreation building due to fire at the Campground. “As a Club and residents of this community, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Saint Andrews Volunteer Fire Department and assisting departments for their quick action in containing the fire. Their dedication to the safety of our community often goes unnoticed yet should never be underestimated.” says Vernon Lister, Club President.

Since the incident there has been much careful consideration and reviews of plans and budgets in order to find a way to maintain the commitment to funding community programmes for 2023. As a result, Kiwanis is preparing to cut back the planned capital expense projects at the Campground for next year. Although the planned improvements to amenities at the campground are important, there is a firm belief that the community’s needs come first.

The Kiwanis Club is, of course, disappointed that this incident and loss has occurred. As a prime recreational destination, there are many necessary costs involved in upgrading and maintaining the high standards and quality that campers have come to expect from Kiwanis Oceanfront Camping. The Campground is a proved economic driver for the community for everything from the local shops and services to attractions and restaurants.

Police are still investigating the cause the fire which they have officially deemed as “suspicious”, yet the Club is confident that insurance will meet a significant amount of the losses for replacements elements where appropriate, enabling future capital improvements to continue in due course.

Kiwanis DraKonians at Race by-the-Sea Dragon Boat Competition at Katy’s Cove

Uncategorized

The Kiwanis Club of Saint Andrews recently competed in the first-ever Race by-the-Sea Dragon Boat Competition at Katy’s Cove on Saturday, August 27, 2022. The event was organized by the Paddling Club of Saint Andrews, and teams came from across Eastern Canada to compete. While the Kiwanis “DraKonians” didn’t place in the medal ceremony, they made up for it in team spirit and look forward to returning to the event next year.

“The feedback we’ve heard from teams who are visiting Katy’s Cove and St. Andrews for the first time is incredible,” said Shelley Hughes-Turner, one of the organizers of Race by-the-Sea and a member of Saint Andrews Paddling Club. “They are in awe of how beautiful it is here. As a paddling club, we are very fortunate to have such a beautiful venue to practice in regularly outside of this competition, and it’s wonderful to be able to share it with other teams and visitors to the area.”

A big congratulations goes out to the ‘tit Bateau, a team from Moncton composed of breast cancer survivors and their supporters, who took home first place in the competition.

St. Andrews Kiwanis Club collaborates with Town on Home Delivery Service

News

Saint Andrews’ home delivery and check-in service has resumed in 2021 to help local residents safely stay in their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. A collaboration between the Town of Saint Andrews and the Kiwanis Club of Saint Andrews, the program has about 60 local volunteers doing daily deliveries of essential goods from Joey’s Independent Grocer, Cockburn’s Drugs and St. Andrews Home Hardware. Volunteers also make phone calls to vulnerable residents who might otherwise feel isolated during the pandemic. The calls can range anywhere between a few minutes in length to half an hour, depending on how the person on the other end of the line is feeling.

If the delivery service helps maintain the physical safety of residents, the wellness checks round out the program by checking in on vulnerable residents’ mental health and also provide a human connection during this trying time. The program originally began in 2020 as an early response to COVID-19. Although it scaled back over the summer months last year due to a steep decline in cases, the program resumed in 2021 when the second wave was in full effect across Canada.

“It’s important for our community that we are ready for anything that comes, especially with the new variants that are out there. There is a possibility that they can be more contagious and therefore more deadly,” said Guy Groulx, a town councillor and Kiwanis member who helps schedule the both deliveries and the check-ins to vulnerable people. “If we are ready with our delivery program in place, as a community we will be better prepared.”

Although New Brunswick’s COVID-19 case numbers have been in low in comparison to other provinces, part of the reason for this is no doubt due to neighbours looking out for neighbours in a Maritime fashion. This program exemplifies this. If you live in the Saint Andrews area and would like to take part in the COVID-19 delivery service and wellness checks, either as a recipient or as a volunteer, call Town Clerk Paul Nopper at the Town of Saint Andrews Office at 506-529-5120.
